How Robots Learn From Human Demonstrations

How robots learn from human demonstrations using teleoperation, imitation learning, video and embodiment-aware representations.

Published September 26, 2026 · Robot Embodiment Editorial

Why human demonstrations are valuable

People can show task intent and successful strategies without writing every control rule. Demonstrations provide examples of perception, sequencing and physical interaction.

From demonstration to policy

Systems can learn by behavior cloning, trajectory modeling, action chunking or multimodal representation learning. Teleoperation can provide demonstrations already expressed through a robot interface.

Video versus robot data

Human video contains rich information but does not directly expose robot actions. Robot trajectories provide stronger action grounding but are more expensive to collect. Combining sources creates an important research opportunity.
