Teleoperation in Robotics

Teleoperation in robotics explained: how human operators generate demonstrations, control robots and collect physical interaction data.

Published September 26, 2026 · Robot Embodiment Editorial

What is robot teleoperation?

Teleoperation places a human in the control loop, allowing an operator to move or guide a remote robot. It is used for direct operation, data collection and demonstration generation.

Why teleoperation matters for learning

Human operators can produce successful trajectories in situations where writing a complete controller is difficult. Those trajectories can become training data for imitation and generalist robot policies.

Embodiment and interfaces

A teleoperation interface must map human motion or commands to a robot body. This makes embodiment explicit: the interface must account for kinematics, workspace, latency and available actuators.
